Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid surrounding joints. Synovial fluid acts as a lubricant that allows bones to glide smoothly over each other. It also acts as a “shock absorber” in response to the forces produced across joints. When the cartilage of the knee joint wears down, pain can occur. Hyaluronic acid injections into the osteoarthritic joint can mimic the qualities of synovial fluid and provide pain relief. Hyaluronic acid injections are most effective in early stages of osteoarthritis.

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory medications that can be given to relieve pain from inflamed tendons, bursae, and joints. Therapeutically, these injections can quickly provide pain relief and reduce inflammation, which can then allow muscle function to improve. Diagnostically, these injections can also help “quantify” the amount of pain coming from one sight. There are risks of cortisone and these should be discussed with your provider. The effects of these injections are also variable. They should not be repeated frequently due to possible risk of joint damage or soft tissue deterioration over time.
